The Gift – a Poem by Antonio Cassone

Because I’ve grown;

And due to the fact that what I feel is true,

All that has been reaped, has been sown;

Thoughts of you can no longer make me feel blue.

Trivial and simple to you it may seem;

I have one last gift to give.

After many a vision, and many a dream;

You see, there’s more than you, and I have my life to live.

This gift I give is not a package.

It isn’t wrapped with bows and ribbons.

Nor can it be stored as baggage.

And it won’t comfort you one lonely day,

In a closet behind your linens.

If you love something set it free

They say; and if I let you go

I wonder--will you come back to me?

Life will tell the tale,

But as the crying eyes of the dove

Could see; my tears of growth would fill a pail.

I give you love; very simply; Love.
